Day 21: Praying for the exploited

By Gia Hughes

Thank God for men, like Boaz, who respond with dignity and restraint to vulnerable women.

Ruth was an honorable woman, yet vulnerable because of the circumstances that surrounded her. No husband, no money, little food, new location in a different culture, and knowledge of very few people around her. She was instructed to go to her husband’s kin, so she might find favor with him. She was sent to lie at his feet. With this late night opportunity, Boaz had a choice. He was a man with natural desires and temptations, yet he chose actions that would honor her instead of taking advantage of her vulnerabilities. He wanted to do what was right.

Although temptations surround all of us, it is still a personal choice to succumb to them. Each day we have numerous opportunities to follow God’s way to a path of righteousness, or our own way to a path of destruction. When searching the database for National Sex Offenders located in the Dothan area within a three mile radius of downtown, I found there are thirty-five people who are on this list. That is thirty-five who chose to act upon their temptations; thirty-five whose choice will follow them the rest of their lives.

Most victims of trafficking have no choice. An unsettling truth is the United States produces more than 50 percent of all child pornography that exists and we are the No. 1 distributor in the world for it. How could this reality not feed into the lusts that so envelope the need for sex, especially sex with minors; thus the demand for trafficking.

Maybe seeing things in a different light would change what you think about trafficking. Maybe, just maybe, it will encourage you to make choices of dignity and restraint when dealing with your own temptations. Men, you have a choice to help end it. Please watch below:

"But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can't stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13
